Themed afternoon about flying and aircraft toilets "Toilets above the clouds" at Porzellanikon Selb on Thursday, 21 September 2023.

16:00: Hands-on programme "The Porzellanikon takes to the air",18:00: Lecture "Relief at 10,000 metres altitude. Fun and exciting facts about modern aeroplane toilets".To coincide with the special exhibition "Toilet & Co. Sanitary ceramics from the outhouse to the high-tech toilet", Porzellanikon Selb is organising a themed afternoon about flying and aircraft toilets. The afternoon starts at 4.00 pm with a hands-on programme for young and old aircraft fans, which will first focus on flying itself. Various types of flying will be tested together as an experiment in front of the museum building. Questions will also be answered about the difference between airships and aeroplanes and why it is not possible to fly on holiday in a rocket. Young and old alike can try their hand at tinkering and experimenting and then launch their home-made creations into the air.

The themed afternoon continues at 18:00 with a presentation on aircraft toilets by Sebastian Tivig. The speaker is an engineer and Senior Cabin Integration Manager at Diehl Aviation and develops aircraft lavatories. In his presentation entitled "Relief at 10,000 metres. Fun and exciting facts about modern aircraft toilets", the expert will report on the requirements that an aircraft toilet must fulfil for the world's major airlines. An on-board toilet should be as light as possible and at the same time extremely stable, while the changing tables must be able to withstand a load of 90 kilos. Interested visitors will learn that the passengers' droppings race through the pipes faster than a Formula 1 car and how the vacuum and waste tank system works to dispose of waste and minimise odours, what a glass of champagne has to do with flushing and what the toilets of the rich and famous look like on board an aircraft. After the lecture, museum guests can visit the exhibition and take a closer look at an original aeroplane toilet. They will also find out why it is best to sit on the toilet by chance in the event of an aircraft crash.

To ensure that all participants feel as if they are flying away on holiday for one evening after the end of the summer holidays, the snacks and refreshments are completely tailored to the aircraft theme.
