ARTIST MEETS TECHNICIAN - LECTURES ON 3D PRINTING AT THE PORZELLANIKON

3D printing has become synonymous with high-tech in recent years. Not only plastics, metals or even concrete from the 3D printer have found their way into many areas with extreme requirements. In aerospace, medical technology, mechanical engineering or the automotive industry, the pioneering technology of 3D printing has long been a standard procedure. 3D printing is also becoming increasingly popular in ceramic design.

As part of the special exhibition "ART MEETS TECHNOLOGY. Ceramics from the 3D Printer" at Porzellanikon - Staatliches Museum für Porzellan at the Selb site, an evening of lectures on 3D printing will be held on Tuesday,  September 14, 2021, from 6 pm, under the motto "ARTIST MEETS TECHNICIAN - Lectures from Two Perspectives". An artist and a technician will each describe their projects and experiences around this forward-looking topic in one-hour lectures.

Professor Gerhard Hahn from the Department of Design at Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences will talk about "3D Printing with Silicon Carbide in Art & Design" from 6 to 7 pm. The artist, engineer and university lecturer will give a multi-layered insight into his numerous projects on 3D printing in the artistic field. He and his students have repeatedly carried out projects with renowned ceramic 3D printing companies in recent years. With silicon carbide, a technical ceramics material that was also used in the heat shield of the ISS space shuttle, Professor Hahn developed an unusual research series with seven personal art projects and student project collaborations. Professor Hahn is intensively involved with this topic - both creatively and journalistically.

Dr. Wolfgang Kollenberg, Managing Director of WZR ceramic solutions GmbH, Rheinbach, will speak from 8 to 9 p.m. on the topic of "3D printing - with new business models to innovative products". The focus of his talk will be on the technical and economic potential of 3D printing. Dr Wolfgang Kollenberg recognised its potential as early as 2004. Since then, WZR has carried out fundamental developments in the field of 3D printing of ceramics and has been producing ceramic components using this manufacturing process since 2008. Since its foundation in 1996, WZR has become one of the leading companies for the development and production of technical ceramic components in Europe. As managing director of WZR ceramic solutions GmbH, Dr. Kollenberg was one of the initiators of the special exhibition "KUNST TRIFFT TECHNIK. Ceramics from the 3D Printer" at Porzellanikon. He made the shaping of the exhibition designs possible with the company's own equipment.

Between the two lectures and afterwards, participants will have the opportunity to exchange views with the speakers and to take part in a short tour of the special exhibition "KUNST TRIFFT TECHNIK. Ceramics from the 3D Printer", which will be open until 10 pm that evening. In addition, the museum's own 3D printer can be experienced live in action - even before the lectures begin between 5 and 6 pm.

Participants in the event pay the museum entrance fee (€ 5.00 / reduced € 4.00). Registration is required and can be made at mandy.liebsch@porzellanikon.org or by telephone on +49 9287 918000. The Porzellanikon's current protection and hygiene concept applies to the event. Further information at www.porzellanikon.org.
