GUIDED TOURS TO HIDDEN PLACES IN THE MUSEUM - OPEN MONUMENT DAY AT PORZELLANIKON

This year's "Open Monument Day" will take place next Sunday, 12 September 2021. Porzellanikon will also be offering two guided tours behind the scenes at its Selb site - to some of the museum's stations that are not usually accessible to visitors or do not immediately catch the eye of the observer.

During the 90-minute tours (starting at 11 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.), participants will descend into the so-called "Maukkeller" (mewing cellar), for example, where the porcelain mass used to be stored in a dark and damp place for maturing. Another station takes the participants very close to the drum mills, which were used to grind quartz and feldspar and can only be admired from a distance during a normal visit to the museum. Those who would like to take a look at Porzellanikon's steam engines from above as well as from below will also get their money's worth during the guided tours with Kathleen Klötzer, the Porzellanikon's expert on industrial history.

Why there is a huge pile of broken glass around the museum or how the caretaker used to live and work is also shown and explained by her just as vividly as the routes of the conveyor belts and the tracks of the railway that used to run through the grounds. "I take visitors on a discovery tour of the grounds and the exhibitions at Porzellanikon in Selb. There is a lot to see and learn, even for those who already know the museum. And car enthusiasts are sure to be attracted by our historic fire engine and fire engine," says Kathleen Klötzer, who is looking forward to welcoming many guests to the tour.

Registration is not necessary. Sturdy shoes and a torch are required. Adults pay the Sunday admission fee of 1.00 euro, children and youths up to 18 years of age have free admission. Participation in the guided tours is free of charge. They start at 11:00 am and 2:30 pm. The current hygiene regulations of the Porzellanikon apply.
