Traditional Christmas tree decoration activity at Porzellanikon Selb

The much-loved tree decorating campaign once again brought together various stakeholders from the Fichtelgebirge in 2023 and traditionally started at Porzellanikon - State Museum for Porcelain, Selb. The Czech Embassy in Berlin was chosen as the prominent delivery address for the approx. 3 metre high fir tree from the Fichtelgebirge, which is donated for the campaign by the Bavarian State Forestry. This year's campaign will thus also be part of the Bavarian-Czech Friendship Weeks 2023 of the towns of Asch and Selb. On Friday, 1 December 2023, all participants will travel to Berlin to decorate the tree.

On Thursday, 19 October 2023, 15 boys and girls from Luitpold Primary School in Selb took part in the annual tree decorating event at Porzellanikon Selb from 9:00 am. Together with the museum team, the pupils cut out several hundred classic Christmas tree ornaments in the museum's Creative Factory. Ellen Scherpp, headmistress of Luitpold Primary School; Brique Zeiner from the non-profit organisation "Leben und Lernen in Kenia e.V."; Udo Benker-Wienands, initiator and organiser of the tree decoration campaign; Ulrich Pötzsch, Mayor of Selb; Joachim Reuer, representing Rosenthal GmbH, and Roland Schöffel, Deputy District Administrator of Wunsiedel, were welcomed to the tree decoration campaign, which took place for the 13th time today. The tree decoration campaign, which has now become a permanent feature of Porzellanikon in co-operation with Rosenthal GmbH, is specifically sponsored by the Free State of Bavaria in order to inspire children and young people to visit the museum and enjoy educational museum activities.

The porcelain paste and the production tools required for the tree decoration campaign were provided by Rosenthal GmbH. After the cutting-out process, the decorations will be fired in the kilns at the Rosenthal factory on Rothbühl in Selb. The pupils will also be able to experience the emptying of the kiln, which is planned for 9 November 2023, at first hand.

So far, the fir tree from the Fichtelgebirge has always been placed in prominent locations in Germany and other European countries, for example in the Bundestag in Berlin in 2011, in the Bavarian State Parliament in Munich in 2013, for the Federal President Joachim Gauck in Berlin in 2014, in the European Parliament in Strasbourg in 2015, for the Obermünster Diocesan Centre in the Diocese of Regensburg in 2016, for the Castle Church in Lutherstadt Wittenberg in 2017, for the German Embassy in Prague in 2018, for the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar in 2019 and for the Bavarian State Representation in Berlin in 2022.As always, the pendants will go on sale after Christmas. The revenue will be donated to the Selb-based non-profit organisation "Leben und Lernen in Kenia e. V.", which supports a young child in Nakuru, Kenya.
