40 years Porzellanikon Hohenberg a.d. Eger: Anniversary lecture: "Success without end - The porcelain industry of Upper Franconia until 1914" at Porzellanikon Hohenberg a.d. Eger

The fifth lecture marks the end of the lecture series on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the museum.

On Thursday, 27 October 2022, at 7 p.m., Dr. Arnd Kluge will talk about "Successes without end - The porcelain industry of Upper Franconia until 1914", starting from the invention of European hard porcelain in 1708 until the beginning of the First World War in 1914. After a restrained beginning, characterised by technological start-up difficulties, the expansion of the German porcelain industry began at the end of the 18th century.

How the development of porcelain production radiated from Thuringia to Upper Franconia is illuminated by Dr Kluge, a historian with a doctorate and head of the Hof municipal archives. Based on his post-doctoral thesis "The German Porcelain Industry up to 1914", he draws a line to Carl Magnus Hutschenreuther, who had been producing porcelain in Hohenberg an der Eger since the early 1820s. Nevertheless, it took another generation before the "boom" began in the east of Upper Franconia. The local industry, centred in Selb, profited from the supply of labour, the connection to the Bohemian coalfield via the railway and the decision of entrepreneurs to turn consistently to tableware production. From the 1860s to 1914, the boom continued uninterrupted and laid the foundation for the prosperity of the Upper Franconian porcelain industry up to the present day.

The lecture begins at 7:00 pm at Porzellanikon Hohenberg, Schirndinger Straße 48, 95691 Hohenberg a.d. Eger. Appetizers and drinks will be served.

Price: Museum admission.
