Holiday programmes and events in August 2022 at Porzellanikon Selb and Hohenberg a.d. Eger


The Porzellanikon - State Museum of Porcelain is a hive of activity at both locations Selb and Hohenberg a.d. Eger. The museum team has put together attractive programmes for August 2022 for school children who are not travelling during the summer holidays and for visitors interested in art and culture.

Summer holiday programmes

Things get underway on Tuesday, 2 August 2022 (Selb) with the first holiday programme entitled "Hollywood in Selbling City". In this programme, the little pupils can make animated films with the Selblings under guidance and turn the Porzellanikon mascots into film stars. On Tuesday 9 August 2022 (Selb), the holiday children will design colourful floral patterns under the motto "Flower magic" and paint them on porcelain mugs that can be taken home and fired in the oven at home. Anyone who has always wanted to meet a "book hero made of porcelain" can explore the current special exhibition "UNIKATE erzählen" with the museum team on Thursday 11 August 2022 (Hohenberg a.d. Eger) and listen to stories about the brave boys from Louis Pergaud's classic "War of the Buttons" and the adventure of "Noah's Ark" on the tour. Afterwards, everyone can create their own unique items from buttons and porcelain. "Tile Design" is something schoolchildren can do on Tuesday 16 August 2022 (Selb). This programme is all about facade beautification. Everyone can give free rein to their creativity and create their own tile in the special exhibition "More than Bricks! Tradition and Future of Architectural Ceramics". One of the tiles will be selected and installed in the large tile wall of the exhibition. Under the title "No pot without a handle", interested holiday children will learn on Tuesday 23 August 2022 (Selb) how the spout comes to the pot and the handle to the cup. The programme includes a tour of the permanent exhibition on porcelain production. The secret of how a prince or princess lived will be revealed during a tour of the permanent exhibition on 25 August 2022 (Hohenberg a.d. Eger). Valuable treasures made of white gold give an idea of what life was like at the princely court. Afterwards, children can transform themselves into princes and princesses by making royal medals and enchanting crowns. A warm summer evening in the garden includes "lanterns". After a short guided tour of porcelain production on Tuesday, 30 August 2022 (Selb), the holiday children can create their own individual lantern.

Cultural Coffee

On Wednesday, 3 August 2022, the popular Kulturkaffee will take place again at 14:00. Under the motto "Porcelain with a difference!", curator Thomas Miltschus will take interested visitors on a tour of the special features of Porzellanikon Hohenberg. The participants can be curious! Expertise Days

Porcelain lovers and collectors can look forward to two expert days. They will start on Thursday, 4 August 2022, from 10:00 to 17:00 at Porzellanikon in Hohenberg a.d. Eger. Visitors can bring up to 3 exhibits with them and have them examined by the curator duo for origin, edition size or year of origin. Price per person 3.00 euros (museum admission). On the occasion of the Porzellan Festival in Selb, the curator team will also be available for expert opinions on Saturday, 6 August 2022 from 09:00 to 16:00 at the Porzellanikon hands-on and information stand in Ludwigstraße in Selb. Events on the occasion of the Porcelain Festival

Public guided tour of porcelain production - Porcelain Trip on Saturdays, the
The historic factory buildings and the exhibition on porcelain production at Europe's largest porcelain museum are a popular attraction for visitors from near and far. In the rooms you can see how porcelain tableware was and is made - then and now - from the preparation of the mass and the making of plaster moulds to white production and decoration. A special highlight of the tour is the steam engine in action, which once supplied an entire factory with energy. The porcelain tour starts at 10:30 a.m. and lasts about 1.5 hours. The price is the museum entrance fee.

A curator's tour of the current special exhibition "More than Bricks! Tradition and Future of Architectural Ceramics" at the museum in Selb on Sunday, 7 August 2022. The show presents the tradition and future of architectural ceramics on two times 300 square metres - facades of sacred buildings, commercial buildings, factories as well as interior design and much more. A total of 80 exhibits from Germany and Europe are on display in the special exhibition. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a virtual walk through the entrance gate of the Paris World Exhibition in 1900. On Monday, 8 August 2022, both museum sites will be open to visitors from 10:00 to 17:00 on the occasion of the Porcelain Festival. At the museum in Hohenberg a.d. Eger, interested visitors can join the popular cultural breakfast with a curator's tour of the current special exhibition "UNIKATE erzählen. Artistic Meissen 1970 - 2010" and enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet after the tour. The price is the museum admission plus 15.00 euros for the guided tour with breakfast buffet. Museum festival & 80s party

Party mood is the order of the day on Saturday, 13 August 2022. Porzellanikon Hohenberg a.d. Eger celebrates its 40th anniversary with a cool 80s party.Anyone who wants to relive memories of shoulder pads, neon colours and 99 balloons is welcome. The party will be held in the romantic museum garden with good food and cocktails and a large collection of 80s hits by the DJ. Admission is 5.00 euros per person. The traditional museum festival continues the very next day, 14 August 2022. It starts at 11:00 a.m. with a white sausage breakfast and coffee & cake. Those who have not yet had the opportunity to admire the studio exhibition by Angelika Krauß can do so at a finissage at 2:00 pm with the porcelain artist. The museum festival is accompanied by an atmospheric supporting programme that appeals to all age groups. Price: 1.00 Euro Sunday admission.

Senior citizens' afternoon

The afternoon for senior citizens entitled "Colourful Drinking Culture" on 17 August 2022 is all about drinking coffee, tea and hot chocolate in style. During an entertaining short tour, guests will get to the bottom of how drinking culture has changed over the past centuries, why tea and coffee pots look different and try out different drinks themselves. Afterwards, they can try their hand at painting porcelain themselves and use the inspirations from the exhibition to create their own personal porcelain piece under the guidance of an experienced expert.
