REOPENING OF PORZELLANIKON ON MAY 12, 2021

After a long break, the time has finally come again! Porzellanikon - State Muse-um of Porcelain, with its two locations in Selb (Factory & Technology) and Ho-henberg a.d. Eger (Villa & Collection), opens on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, to visitors once again.

"We are very pleased that our two locations will be filled with life," explains Anna Dziwetzki, director of Porzellanikon. "Of course, we have used the time to get a lot going behind the scenes at the museum at both locations." For example, major projects were initiated, such as the implementation of accessibility and inclusion at the Hohenberg site. "Everyone has porcelain at home. We want everyone to be able to experience it in all its fascinating facets," says Petra Werner, chief curator for the art and cultural history of porcelain, describing the goal of the project. The project is being funded with federal funds as part of the "Investments for National Cultural Institutions in Germany" program. Among other things, the Porzellanikon is using the funding provided to develop a barrier-free multi-media guide. This will provide an initial digital guidance system and all exhibition texts in German, English and Czech. In addition, it will connect 20 highlight objects of the exhibition by means of a digital guided tour. A special guidance system as well as tactile stations for people with visual im-pairments, the provision of all texts in easy-to-read language and the adaptation of object labels in terms of font size and contrast for better legibility are further elements of the project, which will be implemented by the end of 2022.

At the Selb site, the main focus in recent months has been on beautification work: the entrance area, including the museum store, has been redesigned and given a colorful look, as has the elevator in House 3, where porcelain production is presented. The steam engines were technically overhauled and polished to a high gloss. The media equipment for playing video and audio clips in the permanent exhibitions was updated and converted to energy-saving technology, to name just a few examples.

"At the same time, we are already preparing the next special exhibitions," says museum director Dziwetzki. In Selb, for example, work is underway on the accompanying program for the special exhibition "MORE THAN BRICKS! Tradition und Zukunft der Architekturkeramik," the start of which has been postponed to March 2022 due to corona. In the summer of 2022, an exhibition in Hohenberg will present the unique pieces from the extensive and impressive porcelain collection of Meissner Porzellan from the period between 1970 and 2010, which was bequeathed to Porzellanikon by a collector couple from northern Germany. Furthermore, plans are already underway for an exhibition entitled "Baroque Luxury for High Society - Bohemian Porcelain," which will accompany the Bavarian-Czech Friendship Weeks in 2023.

"But for now, we are looking forward to many visitors for our current exhibitions in Hohenberg and Selb," says Anna Dziwetzki. The special exhibition "KUNST –TRIFFT TECHNIK. Keramik aus dem 3D-Drucker" at the Selb site has been extended until October 3, 2021. The special exhibition "FORMVOLLENDET – Keramikdesign von Hans-Wilhelm Seitz" can be seen in Hohenberg an der Eger until January 9, 2022. After both exhibitions had to close again shortly after their opening due to corona reasons, the artists agreed to continue to make their exhibits available to Porzellanikon. "But our permanent exhibitions are also always worth a visit, and our popular demonstrations in the mass mill, on the steam engine, in the turning shop and foundry take place on a regular basis."

A visit to Porzellanikon is possible from May 12, 2021, in accordance with current regulations, at individually specified times (date and time) for a maximum of two hours and can be made through the following channels: Registration (appointment) at the Porzellanikon Visitor Center by phone +49 9287-91800-0 or by means of purchasing a ticket via the online store of München Ticket (link on the Porzellanikon homepage). The presentation of a negative test result is not necessary. On site, the required contact tracking is done via the luca app. Wearing an FFP2 mask is mandatory during the visit.
