On the Prowl – Huntable Animals in Porcelain

Special exhibition at Porzellanikon – Staatliches Museum für Porzellan in Selb from 12 December 2015 to 3 April 2016.

A fox with a rooster in its mouth, a familiar doe with her fawn or a rutting stag: Many of the pieces in the new special exhibition “On the Prowl – Huntable Animals in Porcelain” at Porzellanikon – Staatliches Museum für Porzellan in Selb seem to be taken directly from life. Over 150 wild animals will be displayed from nine renowned porcelain companies from a private collection during the exhibition from 12 December 2015 to 3 April 2016.

Exclusive presentations include porcelain figures such as

  • A creeping fox from the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory
  • An impressive Hubertus stag from the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory
  • A standing hare from KPM Berlin
  • A life-size snowy owl from the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory
  • A colourful jay from the Herend Porcelain Manufactory
  • A pheasant from the Bing & Grøndahl Porcelain Manufactory, Copenhagen
  • A standing roebuck from Allach-München GmbH

Extensive studies for lifelike replicas

Like the hunter who must closely watch and know his game before pulling the trigger – which he definitely does not have the chance to do on every hunting trip, the artists who made the porcelain figures shown in this exhibition had to study the wildlife extensively until they were able to replicate the animals in such true-to-life pieces that remind even hunters and experts of real situations they have experienced themselves.

This new special exhibition was designed in collaboration with the German Hunting and Fishing Museum (“Deutsches Jagd- und Fischereimuseum”) in Munich, where it was presented at the beginning of the year before coming to Porzellanikon in Selb.

Curator of the special exhibition: Petra Werner M. A.; Porzellanikon – Staatliches Museum für Porzellan.

A catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition (ISBN 978-3-940027-25-2).
