“ART MEETS TECHNOLOGY. Ceramics from the 3D printer”

Special exhibition
“ART MEETS TECHNOLOGY. Ceramics from the 3D printer”
11 July 2020 to 24 January 2021
Porzellanikon - State Museum for Porcelain, Selb site (Factory & Technology)

In aerospace, medical technology, mechanical engineering or the automotive industry, the groundbreaking technology of 3D printing has long been a standard procedure. Aircraft components, concrete walls, tools, surgical models and, more recently, face masks for protection during the corona crisis can be produced using 3D printing. Recently, design objects, furnishings and architectural models can also be created using the new technology. Which ones they are, will be shown from the 11. July 2020 the special exhibition entitled "ART MEETS TECHNOLOGY. Ceramics from the 3D printer" at Porzellanikon - State Museum for Porcelain, Selb. Keramik aus dem 3D-Drucker" at Porzellanikon - State Museum for Porcelain, Selb.

In future, ceramic artists, product and communication designers and architects will increasingly work with 3D technology. Within the scope of a competition, which was announced by Keramion, a ceramics museum in Frechen, in 2018, they were allowed to present their first works, which they created with the support of the company WZR ceramic solutions GmbH from Rheinbach. Ten participants in the competition took up the challenge of exploring the creative potential of 3D printing. The result is experimental, imaginative and technically sophisticated prototypes ranging from architectural models and pieces of jewellery to furnishings such as lamps. The additive manufacturing techniques used were material extrusion, which works with porcelain paste, and binder jetting, which works with aluminium oxide. The powder-like substance is already used in technical ceramics. It can be used to create bodies of practically any geometry, something that classical ceramics cannot do. In the future, only a data model will be needed to implement the plastic object, so that it can be printed out using technical processes. Applied layer by layer, the "component" is put together and thus enables the realization of interesting product solutions that are unattainable by conventional means. The special show at Porzellanikon at the Selb location will illustrate which overlapping structures, cavities and undercuts are possible with 3D printing, for example. During the exhibition, the museum's 3D printer will demonstrate the process of material extrusion with porcelain mass. In addition, films and illustrative objects from WZR will explain the potential of additive manufacturing. An impulse for designers to overcome the "limits of what is possible" when designing components.
