3D printing is also becoming increasingly popular in ceramic design. The combination of additive manufacturing with ceramic material creates a forward-looking symbiosis of high technical know-how and sophisticated aesthetics. Under the title " ART MEETS TECHNOLOGY. Ceramics from the 3D printer“, Porzellanikon - Staatliches Museum für Porzellan, Selb will be presenting prototypes of applied art created with the aid of two 3D manufacturing processes from 11 July 2020.
For designers who work with ceramics, new possibilities open up for the creation of highly complex, geometric shapes, which can be produced as unique pieces or as individualised small series. Two 3D processes make this possible. On the one hand, the most widespread method of material extrusion, which works with ceramic material. The other is the binder jetting method, which works with aluminium oxide, a powder-like substance that is already widely used in technical ceramics. New, previously unimaginable possibilities in aesthetics open up thanks to the surface structures typical of these processes and inspire designers to rethink detailed and contemporary forms. From 11 July 2020, Porzellanikon will be demonstrating how these new methods have been applied in practice at its Selb location. The resulting works are experimental, imaginative and technically sophisticated prototypes, ranging from architectural models and pieces of jewellery to furnishings. These exhibits are the result of a competition for additive process engineering, which was organized by WZR ceramic solutions GmbH together with Keramion, a ceramics museum in Frechen. The ten participants, including product and communication designers, ceramists and architects, developed almost any shape. The question of technical implementation is also answered in the special exhibition in Selb: Films as well as various illustrative objects illustrate the manufacturing techniques. In addition, the Porzellanikon's 3D printer demonstrates how the material extrusion process with porcelain mass works and what makes it so forward-looking.
