Curator's tour of the special exhibition "More than Bricks! Tradition and Future of Architectural Ceramics"

Whether in the form of bricks, clinker or tiles, ceramics are inseparably linked to the history of building and living. They form - often hidden under thick plaster - the basic framework of countless buildings. Yet ceramics are a real eye-catcher as a building material. Resourceful architects recognised this early on and deliberately used it to give the dull walls a special shine. The exhibition MORE THAN BRICKS is as varied as the material itself! Take a stroll through the city: stroll past shops, churches and castles, marvel at huge factory buildings and learn more about the history of ceramics as a unique building material. But not only will your thirst for knowledge be quenched, your creativity is also in demand. You can brick walls yourself, build facades and even design your own tile that will become part of a huge mural in the exhibition. You have the cityscape in your hands! A special highlight of the exhibition is the virtual reality technology used for the first time in the Porzellanikon: Put on the VR glasses and venture on a journey through time. Visit the Paris World's Fair in 1900 and walk through the Porte Monumentale. You can discover the numerous ceramic elements that made this gateway so unique. Back in the present, you can now marvel at the ceramics you have just admired in real life. The successful material of building ceramics continues to shape people's lives to this day, and thanks to its lasting, durable beauty, it will continue to do so for a long time to come. We promise you, after visiting our exhibition you will see the architecture of your neighbourhood with completely different eyes.
