Didn’t you always want to see tableware from which people dined in times of King August the Strong? Do you recognise your grand-mother’s best dinner service? Can you remember how long you saved up for that rose vase you’d always had your eye on, which you then broke on Christmas Eve…? You’ll discover many new things in the German Porcelain Museum, as well as being reminded of details from your own tableware and home decor. Whatever was produced in porcelain in German-speaking Europe after Johann Friedrich Böttger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus in 1708, for the first time in Europe, had found the formula for making porcelain – you will find it at the German Porcelain Museum.

With its sophisticated and artistic designs, porcelain first used to be the preserve of the aristocracy; but with the advent of industrialisation its application and reputation changed dramatically: porcelain now found its way into bourgeoisie and middle-class living rooms. Former courtly collectibles became generally available mass produced items. The Hohenberg presentation focuses on the 19th and 20th centuries and demonstrates this shift in value very clearly in lively domestic scenes where entire social contexts and atmospheres can be glimpsed. – Dining in Biedermeier style? Salted sticks and strawberry punch in front of the first colour television? Aeroplane dining for the modern global player?

A stroll through the German Porcelain Museum shows how people eat and live – then, and today. In an ongoing progression of change, the latest innovations at Frankfurt Trade Fair are presented, thus giving an insight into the latest trends in the German porcelain industry.

Four museums, two locations, one subject: porcelain!
